Fitmind Case Study
FitMind is a meditation app and program that's backed by neuroscience and has content written by actual monks. I started using FitMind in 2019 and quickly realized the app had amazing content but a confusing user experience and design. I reached out to the founder Liam and offered to help redesign his app.
Liam and I went through the full design process from start to finish—starting with user feedback and problem identification, all the way to fully polished mockups
This was a freelance project that originally started small in scope but grew to a full UX and brand redesign

ll brand and UX design work were created using Sketch
Problems
The low color contrast makes it difficult to see, and complaints about accessibility
Not clear how to navigate from meditation to the applicable learning that goes along with it
Users want to see their progress
The founder wants the user to form a healthy mediation habit (ideally a daily habit)
Not easy to see what meditation you left off with and how to jump back into the next meditation
Not able to "Favorite" a meditation - common user request
The founder wants to showcase the new content and the latest podcast episode
Solutions
Brand redesign including logo, color palette, and updated marketing materials
Combine meditations and learning into courses
Integrate with Apple Health and show progress with modules
Notification reminders and other nudges
Dashboard with one-tap access to the previous state
Add “Favorites” option
Showcase new content (podcast, meditations, and other)
Brand design
The founder created a mood board
I created a new brand for FitMind that met the Founder's goals - tranquility and professionalism. No "woo woo" design.
I created a formal style guide that consisted of:
Iconography
Typography
Color Palette
Logo
Style Guidelines
Wireframes & Journey Map
Started with a journey map to diagram and map out possible new flows
Once we settled on a flow, I started creating wireframes for each screen
After several iterations, we landed on simple designs that met our user goals but weren't going to be a massive engineering lift—given budget constraints.
Reviewed all wireframes and new flow with the founder's engineering team for feedback and sign-off.
Flow & Navigation
Created a Home screen to showcase current meditation modules, and new content, and easily access favorites and new podcasts.
One-tap access to your current mediation and the module you left off on—these may not be the same as users jump around and explore new content.
Searchable content and lessons
Create modules - a course with multiple mediations and lessons grouped by a similar theme (breathing, emotions, cravings, etc.)
Secondary actions: Add to favorites and PDF with additional information
Meditation
Added secondary actions directly to the meditation screen as well: favorite, additional PDF, and mark as played (high user request)
The success screen guides the user to play the accompanying lesson, without forcing them.
An additional chance to share or favorite a meditation after being completed by the user.
Habit Formation
Integrated with Apple Health to show usage statistics and progress on the app. The second graph showcases their self-reported mood over time.
The app prompts the user to report how they're feeling after the user initially opens the app for the day
Added in notifications for helpful reminders
In addition to easy access to your current meditation series, on the Home page we wanted to give the user quick access to highly requested features:
Mental Fitness (usage and progress)
Favorites
Daily workouts (combine meditations to make a personalized playlist)
Simple meditation timer
It was important for the Founder to showcase the latest podcast episode, as it generates a lot of marketing traffic.
The Gifting was a fun feature we tried as an experiment and has proven to be a highly effective sharing tool. It's been used more than anticipated.
